Volunteer Software Developer
Join the team at SafelyHome!
SafelyHome is a not-for-profit mobile application created by students, for students and members of the public to feel safer on nights out! After development and release in May 2023, our small team of volunteers and developers have been actively developing, maintaining and growing the app in our spare time. As we look ahead with an exciting roadmap of ideas and platform enhancements, we're expanding our volunteer development team. This is your chance to be a part of our mission and make a meaningful impact!
What would I be doing?
As a volunteer developer on SafelyHome, you’ll have the opportunity to work on a range of new features for the app, both small and large! As well as contributing new ideas for the roadmap and our planned website platform update.
What’s in it for you?
Flexible Hours: We are super flexible with your hours, allowing you to contribute on a schedule that suits you best.
Real-World Experience: Gain hands-on experience with a project that's making a difference. You’ll be involved in the entire development cycle, from brainstorming and implementing new features to seeing your code go live within a few weeks of joining!
Impactful Work: Contribute to a mission-driven project that enhances the safety and well-being of students and the public. Your work will help make nights out safer for everyone, giving you the satisfaction of making a real difference.
Collaborative Environment: Work alongside a passionate and supportive team of developers dedicated to helping you learn and grow.
Skill Development: Enhance your technical skills with popular and desirable technologies, and build your expertise in a meaningful and impactful setting.

This role is open to any developer from any experience level - we were students not long ago so know how tricky it can be to find experience these days and are aware this is a volunteering role! Therefore we encourage all to apply but the following would also be highly preferable.
- Experience with React/ React Native and Javascript or TypeScript,
- Experience with CSS,
- Experience with the Expo Framework,
- Experience with Git,
- Upwards of a couple of hours each week to work on assigned tasks,
- Most Important - A passion to work on the SafelyHome project and a desire to see it succeed!
Application Process
Given that this is a volunteer role the application process will aim to be fair and far from tedious - we understand how long and painful job applications can sometimes be and so have tried to keep it short!
To apply please send us your CV and a Cover letter to hello@safely-home.com and we will get back to you as soon as you can! We love it when people are passionate about the project too so if you would like to send an ideas list or anything else please do!
